HOUNDS OF HOPE

The Jason Debus Heigl Foundation (jasonheiglfoundation.org), which honors Katherine's late brother, promotes the humane treatment of animals. Heigl Hounds of Hope rescues dogs from high-kill shelters throughout southern California. They are vetted, given obedience training, and ready to find loving homes.

RAMMCATIONS

Though some use the evidence to suggest she's a diva, one can argue that Kath-erine wouldn't be the star she is today without her ballsy moves and vocal, opinionated point of view. She called her first hit, Knocked Up, "a little sexist," stood up for gay best friend T.R. Knight at the Golden Globes, and bowed out of the Emmy race in 2008 because "I did not feel that I was given the material this season to warrant an Emmy nomination." Without that candor, she'd be just another milquetoast starlet.
"I spent so many years just saying what I felt without thinking about the ramifications, without understanding that I have this opinion but not everyone might share that opinion and now they don't like me because of it. That was really awkward. I hate it when people say this, but I'm a people pleaser," she explains. "I was really raised with the idea that it's important to be honest and to share your experiences, both disappointing and exhilarating. But sometimes I think the American public just wants to see my life as good fortune. They don't want to know about the day-to-day. It ruins the fantasy. It's lame to say that I'm a normal girl, but I think I am."
And like any normal girl, Katherine's learning that baby can get in the way of a romantic evening with her hubby, like when Naleigh threw up on her lingerie. "If parent time interferes with sexy time, that's that," she says, laughing.

Gaia Repossi

Her age isn't the only thing belied by her appearance. Although most assume she's French—and with a closet full of Celine and Givenchy, who can blame them?—Repossi is very Italian and very proud of it. "I love being Italian," she declares. "I love being tan, showing some skin, and putting together strong looks. And I eat a lot of pasta!"
erhaps it's the , mix of the two—an Italian background and a French way of life—that helped transform the rebellious Monte Carlo-raised teenager into a budding fashion icon. (She has unofficially been ordained the new face ofchic, minimalist style.) Notes Altuzarra, "She mixes a kind of French nonchalance with Italian glamour and femininity."
Repossi, who has been an avid artist since she was 14 and continues to paint every day, credits her style to her mother, who was a loyal client to many of the great couturiers of the late 20th century: Valentino,Yves Sain Gaia Repossi Laurent, and Hubert defor Alexander Givenchy. But since the Wang cuff. '90s, Repossi says, her repossi.com mother has worn almost exclusively Chanel. "She has it all!" she says, laughing. And today Repossi counts Karl Lagerfeld as a friend as well. He took portraits of her and codesigner Eugenie Niarchos for the promotional materials for their Ere by Repossi collections and turned up at Repossi's uber-A-list Paris Fashion Week fete at the Ritz last fall.
One of the perks of growing up with a chic mother is undoubtedly the hand-me-downs; one of her favorites is a '70s couture YSL cape. She loves to mix such items with more modern finds, like the Chanel high-heeled clogs she has worn all season. It's this personal blend that makes Repossi so unique. "She can wear refinement and luxury without looking pretentious or like she's trying too hard," says Wang. "She's the perfect balance." Derek Blasberg

the sleek chignon

This elegant look's natural ease, texture, and flow ore almost universally flattering. "But its appeal," notes Hallie, "depends on softness and frizz control." As winter turns to spring, dry air can create "static" and affect hair alignment. So Hallie turns to the Pontcoc Pro-V- SnwoHi Shampoo and Conditioner system, which has been formulated to gently cleanse while helping to align each strand for incredibly sleek, glossy hair When using the curling iron, try twisting the hair around the shaft rather than using the curling iron clamp, as it tends to create a Crease in your hair.

PATENT- LEATHER SHINE

High gloss and high glam define this sleek look. To get it, notes Haliie, "your strands need to be aligned and highly reflective." Her secret is Pantenes Pro-VIce Shine Shampoo, Conditioner, and HairsprayThese formulos polish hair's surface lo allow light to penetrate and enhance hair's natural reflectivity; AND they help hair fibers lie smooth to create a glossy surface and 2X the shine in just one use.*

Historically speaking, we've seen the girl-about-town silhouette vacillate between the American socialite's version of specific, pin-tucked chic and a Parisian rock star's rendering of loose and bohemian. This summer, Chanel dominated this Parisian dishevelment with the likes of Lou Doillon, Clemence Poesy, and Joana Preiss looking sultry and smoky in their front-row seats. But this new set has cultivated its own mixture of both these aesthetics: Clothes are luxe and tailored, and the behavior is ladylike, but the overall look isn't nearly as constricted, conservative, or contrived as that of its forebearers.  Not that these girls are completely monogamous with their Valentino and Valli wardrobes. To this Italian flash, these women splice in French class. Repossi is devoted to Celine, Niarchos and Zhukova are personal friends of Riccardo Tisci and love his Givenchy designs, and Sieber admits diat she finds herself in something from Chanel every day. Some girls are even more adventurous: Monroque has been known to work colorful vintage Prada and modern-day Miu Miu pieces into her wardrobe, and Lauren Santo Domingo is happy to wave the American fashion flag with wares from Proenza Schouler and Joseph Altuzarra.  While each girl has her own particular look—Dellal says she's "always been nostalgic for the old glamour of the '30s and '40s," Bianca Brandolini hardly ever covers her long legs, and Repossi says that from her Italian roots she appreciates her "tan in the summer and the confidence to wear strong outfits"— the common theme is a look that is both studied and casual, full of both class and chaos. Somehow it seems these girls are nonchalant and graceful and tousled all at the same cime.

FASHION FLOCK

Many of the members of this new social set, like the Brandolini sisters (Bianca is an actress, and Coco is a fashion consultant), jewelry designers Repossi and Delettrez Fendi, family-brand ambassador Missoni, and fashion stylist Giovanna Battaglia, are proud Italians, so it comes as no surprise that Rome-born, Paris-based fashion designer Giambattista Valli is the unofficial ringleader. It's a role he's happy to assert. "We started this movement at my very first shows. I wanted to bring a certain freshness to the front row, so I invited all my young friends," Valli says now, championing his godfather status. "Since then, they've become the It girls at all the defiles!"
It's a way of life for these Italian women in Paris, mixing their native va-va-voom with a special blend of French chic or, as Valli describes it, "Italian spontaneous attitude mixed
We haven't seen a tight-knit group like this one since the Miller sisters invaded Europe and began marrying its princes in the'90s
with French couture. Caviar et T-shirt! Pizza et haute couture! They are part of a generation regaining its femininity. They have turned the proportions of their mothers' couture gowns into party dresses."
Not that this new guard is limited to France's eastern neighbor. Sieber, a fashion stylist, is Austrian; Dellal, who is the founder and face of the successful shoe company Charlotte Olympia, grew up in London, as did Sophia Hesketh, Lord Hesketh's fashion-stylist daughter; Julia Restoin Roitfeld, an art director, and Josephine de La Baume, a singer and actress, were both born and raised in Paris. The Eastern bloc is represented by supermodel Natalia Vodianova, who is seen in the front row more than she is on the catwalk these days, and art-world power player Dasha Zhukova. And this gang's tentacles reach across the Atlantic too: There's Colombian heiressTatianaSanto Domingo; Brazils Alexia Niedzielski, a photo editor; and fashion editors Lauren Santo Domingo and Monroque, both of whom reside in New York City.

CORNELIA GUEST: LADY OF THE MAI

It's hard to believe that there was a time when well-brought-up girls might have preferred to stay in Locust Valley with their ponies and French governesses rather than head for Manhattan to disappear into the demimonde. Nowadays, busting out of the gilded cage is standard socialite behavior, but Cornelia Guest did it first.
Or if not first, she certainly did it loudest. At age 18, with her mothers pal Nancy Reagan newly installed in the White House, the daughter ot polo-playing Winston and fashion icon C.Z. Guest took her fresh-off-the-horse style to the glittering nocturnal corridors of Studio 54, Xenon, and Regine's. The press dubbed her the Deb of the Decade.
"I was really, really lucky," says Guest on an early-autumn evening soon after putting Templeton—her famous family home in Old Westbury on Long Islands Gold Coast—on the market for $11.9 million. (The price tag includes neither Salvador Dall's portrait of C.Z. nor Andy Warhol's of Cornelia.) "When I was living in the city, I had these people who protected me: Andy, Halston, Scavullo." All three functioned as de facto fain' godfathers for the young Cornelia. Halston taught her how to walk in a dress on the makeshift runway in his studio, and fashion photographer Francesco Scavullo would watch her collect ribbons at the Hampton Classic horse show.
The equestrian habit may have saved Guest from the other popular habits of the day—or night, as the case was. "I loved to go out," she says, "but I was on a horse the next morning. Aid there was my mother at home waiting to wake me up by pointing the garden hose at my bedroom window. The truth is, 1 didn't have that bad-girl gene."
Guest was four years old v/hen she first met Warhol at one ol her parents' Templeton dinners. "Andy came up to my room and played wirh me all night," she remembers. "We became great friends.' Guest recalls the time Warhol joined her at the International Jumping Derby in Newport, Rhode Island. The hotels were booked that weekend, and she and her retinue were staying on a friend's yacht. "One night, the captain came up and said there was a hurricane coming and we needed to go out to sea and ride it out," she says. "Andy turned whiter than he already was. I realized he didn't know how to swim."

Easy Exercises
"A denned leg isn't just about beautiful thighs, it's about toning from your glutes to your ankles," says Los Angeles trainer Danny Musico, whose clients include celebrities like Jessica Simpson. He recommends three sets of 12 to 15 of the following exercises two to three times per week to notice results in two weeks. Calf raises: Stand on an aerobic step with your heels hanging off, then raise yourself up and down on your toes.

Medical Options
Unsightly spider veins? Workout-resistant fat? Exercise and cover-up may not be enough. Consider ...
Sclerotherapy: "To treat small to midsize varicose veins, sclerotherapy is the gold standard," says surgeon Luis Navarro, medical director of New York City's Vein Treatment Center, of the injections designed to irritate the inner lining of the vein so it collapses and disappears. Cost: around $450 per session with about three to five sessions requited.
Mini phlcbectomy: "Larger veins need more aggressive treatment," says Navarro. "The procedure involves taking a needle and making a nick in the skin so we can hook the vein out. It's usually combined with another treatment like sclerotherapy or lasers." Cost: $2,000 and up.
Endovenous laser ablation; A less invasive treatment for larger veins, EVLA uses a laser inside the vein to close it. "It requires one session with local anesthesia, but you can go right back to work," explains Navarro. Cost: around $3,500.
Liposuction: "The most underappreciated areas to treat are the calves and ankles," says Gerald Pitman, a Manhattan plastic surgeon. He adds, "Women often tell me after that they can now fit into their boots." He says that your surgeon should have a good sculptural sense and use ultrafine cannula tubes and mini incisions. Average recovery time is five to seven days. Cost: around $7,000. Liposuction also works well for outer-thigh fat or "saddlebags."Lauren Cohen

Fake Flawless Skin
No one does legs like the Victoria's Secret models, which is why we went to Meredith Baraf, the makeup artist responsible for the glowing gams on the runway. Her advice: Use a self-tanner. Lets face it, legs look better tan. Just make it a fake tan. "And exfoliate beforehand," says Baraf. "It evens out the top layer of your skin so the tan fades naturally." Try Ahava Micro-peeling Cream Wash ($19.50) and Victoria's Secret Sunkissed Bronze Instant Self Tan Lotion ($12). Once the tan dries, set it with a moisturizer like I ubriderm Advanced Therapy Moisturizing Lotion SPF 30 ($6.99). "This helps the tan lastabitlonger."

Slim down with shimmer. Apply highlighter along your shin bones and up the
cen tcr of your thighs to reflect light and make legs look thinner. TrySt. Tropez Skin Illuminator Cream ($25).
Smooth your problem areas. For a quick, albeit temporary, slimming effect, rub in a caffeine-containing lotion like Sunday Riley Liquid Diet ($105).
Last-minute trick: If you have only minutes to get ready, use a fast-drying body bron-zer. "This will make legs appear less past)' and blotchy," notes Baraf. We like Josie Maran Bronzing Argan Oil ($52).

best beauty-LookYounger

Banish wrinkles and boost radiance with Intensive Deep Wrinkle Treatment by Patricia Wexler M.D. Dermatology ($60); it really works! Want firmer skin? Try Olay Professional Pro-X Intensive Firming Treatment ($62), which plumps and tightens in five days.

CELESTIAL COUTURE

Fashion's latest darling, the fearless Lady Gaga, shimmered and shimmied at the Grammy Awards this year in an out-of-this-world Giorgio Armani Prive confection. The designer is over the moon for the star. . V Fittingly, his couture collection (left) was a space odyssey replete with lunar references, semicircular shapes, and sprinklings of sparkle.

editor's obsession

As far as Parisian fashion royalty goes, the perennially best-dressed Camille Miceli reigns supreme. A longtime muse for Marc Jacobs, the effortlessly chic Miceli has held some of the most coveted positions in fashion (she interned for Azzedine AlaYa at age 16 and spent seven years in the press office at Chanel and more than a decade in various incarnations at Louis Vuitton), all leading up to her current role as the artistic director of costume jewelry at Dior. For her much-lauded first collection, the #&cool designer seemed to look to architectural influences, with sleek cone-shaped statement pieces; clusters of mixed metals, chains, and pearls; and more delicate rose-encrusted masterpieces. Ranging in price from $250 to $3,200, the collection hits stores in June.

WHEN CAN YOU RETIRE? (How's Never? Does ) Never Work for You? )

What everyone has been saying lately online, in print, on TV, and everywhere else about retirement. Are your golden years suddenly looking less golden and a lot farther off? BY chris Raymond
IN A NUTSHELL
"By 2037, all the Social Security reserves will have been drained and the income flowing into the program will be enough to pay only 75 percent of scheduled benefits. If that sounds tolerable, consider that two thirds of seniors rely on Social Security as their main source of income. The average annual benefit is $14,000."
Washington Post editorial
But is Social Security shuffling workers off to shuffleboard too early? Isn't 62 supposed to be the new 42?
"Social Security has morphed into a middle-age retirement system. It defines people as old— eligible for Old-Age Insurance—when they are 62. When this benefit was first made available some 70 years ago, people couldn't get it until they were 65, and on average they retired at age 68 (compared with about 64 today). If Americans were to retire for the same number of years today as they did then, on average they would work until about age 75 ... Instead, most d raw benefits for about a decade more than they did when the system was first established—now approaching one third of their adult lives. One or another partner in a couple retiring at age 62 today will probably draw benefits for about 26 years!"

The Day I Ordered a Cup of Coffee

FRANKLIN MCCAIN
On February 1, 1960, I met three of my friends at the North Carolina A&T College library in Greensboro, and together we walked the mile to Wool-worth's. I was wearing my ROTC uniform because I'd come straight from class. It was eerie, walking; nobody talked. For my part, I knew the day might end with me in a pine box.
At that time in the South, African Americans weren't allowed to eat with whites. Woolworth's had a sepa-

ways, I was no longer lonely. Better yet, I knew I would be okay, that I would make it all the way.
And I did make it, all 2,817 miles. I hit the coast of Guyana, South America, on March 14, after 70 days and five hours at sea. My ocean row raised $70,000 for the Blue Planet Run Foundation, which funds drink-rate lunch counter in the basement for "Negroes." My friends and I had agreed that we would sit down at the white lunch counter and ask to be served. And we did just that.
Immediately, there was a hush—it felt like a church in that Woolworth's. Spoons stopped halfway to people's mouths. Every eye was on us.
Franklin McCain (second from left) and friends took a seat and took a stand against bigotry.
Again, we asked the waitress for coffee and doughnuts, and she said, "I'm sorry, but I can't serve you."
"Why not?"
"It's just a custom," she said.
And I asked, "But you'll agree that the custom is wrong, won't you?"
We had resolved to be very polite— our goal was to embarrass people into doing right. So we sat there, waiting.
A policeman came in, and it was clear he was angry. His face was as red as a beet. He stopped right behind me; I could feel his hot breath on my neck as he stood over me. He pulled out his nightstick, and I said to myself, This is it. But he just stood there for a minute, then backed away and started pacing up and down. It dawned on me: He didn't know what to do. That's when I thought, This could work—we could win this.
There was a little old white lady who must have been 200 years old sitting farther down the counter. She finished her doughnut and headed straight for us. I braced myself for a blast of abuse. Instead, she put her hands on our shoulders and said, "Boys, I am so proud of you. I only regret that you didn't do this ten years ago." That gave me added resolve to see it through.
We went back to that lunch counter every day for six months until four African Americans—lunch counter employees of Woolworth's—were finally served a cup of coffee.
Fifteen seconds after I sat down on that stool on that February day in 1960, I felt so relieved, so cleansed, so self-accepting. It was the kind of feeling that holy people pray and chant for. It was the feeling of freedom that people live a lifetime seeking. I wouldn't have felt cheated if I had died right then and there. I was invincible. And I've never felt better in my life. ■

FAVE FACES

Of all the trends that emerged from the fall collections, the proliferation of Chinese models on the runways is the one we hope has legs. The beauties that graced more than a few catwalks included Liu Wen, Fei Fei Sun, Shu-Pei Qin, A Lily Zhi, Bonnie Chen, Ping Hue, and Du Juan. But there's yet more proof that the entire fashion world is aflutter with all things Asian. Even the king of Americana, Ralph Lauren, channeled the East for a stunning collection of streamlined noir looks topped off with traditional Chinese accents.

The ARTISTS STROKES OF GENIUS

As the Chinese art market soars, connoisseurs are looking eastward. Gagosian opened a Hong Kong gallery in January, and this month Frangois Pinault's artistic foundation sponsors an exhibition in the city (presented by Christie's and Shanghai's Rockbund museum) of works by sought-after painter Zeng Fanzhi. Other big stars on the scene: Liu Ye, whose fairy-tale paintings draw record prices at auction, and artist Yang Fudong, who has worked with Prada and Chanel. Meanwhile, sculptor and political activist Ai Weiwei makes his public-art debut in New York's Central Park this month.

THE RECESSION HAS MADE US WISER BUYERS

We're making purchasing decisions more carefully and buying from companies whose values match our own," says John Gerzema, author of the new book Spend Shift: How the Post-Crisis Values Revolution Is Changing the Way We Buy, Sell and Live. Here, three ways the recession has made us more mindful when we open our wallets.
THEN: Credit NOW: Debit
Americans still love plastic, but the recession has inspired us to cut up our credit cards in favor of
the debit variety. "We've started spending money that's really ours, which has forced us to separate our wants from our needs," says Gerzema. Televisions, for example, are moving down the priority list: In a 2010 survey from the Pew Research Center, 42 percent of Americans consider owning a TV a necessity, down 10 percent from 2009. Cars, home computers, and landline phones also made fewer must-have lists, according to the survey.
THEN: Take NOW: Make
"Instead of spending money out of pocket, we're now trying to do things ourselves," says Gerzema. Walmart reports that sales of starter sewing kits increased 30 percent in 2009. More than 5,000 home-landscaping businesses died in 2009, according to market research firm SBI, as homeowners started mowing their own lawns. And six-year-old Make magazine, a do-it-yourself guide, has expanded its brand to include books and a television series. "This big push toward doing things ourselves is a response to the helplessness we felt during the recession," says Gerzema.
THEN: Alone NOW: Together

YOU'RE THE BOSS The consumer has more control than ever, says author John Gerzema.
"We're sophisticated buyers now," says Gerzema, citing two start-ups that have taken off thanks to community-driven buying. Groupon, "the fastest growing company in Web history," according to forbes .com, offers daily discounts at local businesses after a predetermined number of people sign up for the offer. Carrotmob, now active in more than 20 countries, encourages consumers to support businesses that make environmentally friendly changes. b. d.

HOUSEBOUND BY THE WAIT-AND-SEE ECONOMY

In fall 2006, near the height of the housing boom, Valerie and Ty Davis closed on a four-bedroom house in an up-and-coming neighborhood 20 miles south of Birmingham, Alabama. Plenty of room, fair price, good resale value—it was a great deal. Later on, in January 2008, the couple decided they wanted to live closer to Ty's then-five-year-old son, who was living with his mom in Oklahoma. By that time, how-ever, the recession had set in, the housing market had cratered, and the Davises couldn't find a buyer. "The belief that we could relocate easily was a major misconception and something I'll be wary about the next time we buy," says Ty, 36, who owns a recreational vehicle marketing and sales company. Three years later, the Davises are still putting off the move, waiting for the economy to recover. "Ty's family keeps asking when we're going to sell it, but it's just not that easy," says Valerie, 28. "And we're not about to just jump in again."
Despite the disappointments of the past few years, the couple's prudent decision to put a large down payment on their house has kept them from having to sell at a loss. "Now we have the option of staying in the house until the market improves, and we're going to remain patient until the right opportunity comes along," says Ty. Meanwhile, he and Valerie have had to cope with fewer visits to his son, as rising airfares have turned travel to Oklahoma into a budget buster. "Being away from my son has been a daily struggle," says Ty. "I hope that I'll have the opportunity to be with him regularly soon. Until then, I'm thankful that he has an incredible family in Oklahoma."

Retiring, Ready or Not

It's easy to say that one should delay retirement if you sit behind a desk each day ("The Roundup: When Can You Retire?"). Try spending over 40 years of your life in a factory, and see how you feel about retiring "early." I'm 62 and will retire this spring because my body can't handle it anymore. I've paid into the system since I was 16, and I deserve every penny I get from Social Security.
Phil O'Neal, Maywood,Missouri
I just hope I can find somewhere in the workplace to hang my walker when I need it—and I'm a nurse!
Renee Skutt, Midland,Michigan

Who's to Blame, Really?

Gene Cranick "forgets" to pay his fire dues, and the fire department is vilified for not providing a service it wasn't paid to perform ("The 2010Blame & Shame Awards"). If Mr. Cranick forgets to pay his subscription to Reader's Digest, do you keep sending the magazine? His offer to pay for the service while the house is on fire is akin to paying for car insurance after a wreck. Irresponsibility has consequences.
The people in that poor family lost their home, and their four animals burned to death—all for a measly $75 fee? Everyone involved in letting that happen should be arrested for animal cruelty.

Food Fight?

It takes only a bit of common sense to see that the low-fat, high-carbohydrate diet isn't working ("Is This Any Way to Lose Weight?"). I had a baby eight months ago, and I currently weigh less than I did before I got pregnant. I was able to lose the weight by consuming a diet full of naturally occurring fats (such as whole milk, avocados, and butter) and eliminating processed foods. I also have great energy, my sugar cravings have decreased, and I no longer feel weak before meals.
It's not just food. Rest, movement, diet, and genetics all play a part in determining our physical health. I'm not a big sugar fan and agree that highly processed foods are empty calories. However, it's the lack of movement and sleep, along with large portions, that cause the weight gain in most people.

Get Outta Town!

Planning a fly-by-the-seat-of-your-pants weekender without a lot of fuss? It's the new year! Hit your favorite sun-drenched winter hideaway in style with this duffel's worth of essentials.

Chairman of the Board

World-champion surfer KELLY SLATER rules personal style as effortlessly as he does the unruliest of waves.
ack when he was costar-ring on Baywatch in the early 1990s, 20-year-old Kelly Slater became the youngest surfer ever to win the world championship. Now at 36—and a record nine pro-surfing titles later—the Quciksilver athlete has this year become the oldest world champion in the history of the sport. He's posed for Versace, jammed with Ben Harper, penned a memoir, and dated Gisele Bundchen and Pamela Anderson. But after 30 years of hanging 10, the kid from Cocoa Beach isn't about to hang up his neoprene and walk into the sunset...or clam up about his run-in swith killerwaves and wild women.. .or stop dressing like he hasn't a care in the world. On a recent afternoon at a beach-side ranch near Santa Barbara, the East Coast short-boarder mixed and matched some of this season's coolest designs and sportswear as deftly as he conquers hardcore curls. Some things just come naturally.
WHEN WAS THE MOMENT YOU WENT FROM SURFER DUDE TO SURFER CELEBRITY?
When I was 20. For people who become well-known, there's usually a point at which that knowledge of your name surpasses who you really are. Baywatch thrust me into fame immediately. I did win the world title my first time that same year, but the number of people who hear about that through the media as compared to the people who see Baywatch on TV is kind of minuscule.
YOU'VE HAD PLENTY OF HIGH-PROFILE GIRLFRIENDS. WAS THAT A PART OF FAME?
No, it's just the circles that you run in. Dating Gisele Bundchen and Pam Andersonjust happened organically, because we used to work together. But some of it was bullshit, completely blown out ofproportion. I never dated Cameron Diaz, for instance. She's like my sister. She's like a dude.

HOW WOULD YOU DESCRIBE YOUR PERSONAL STYLE?
Sloppy. My girlfriend tries to style me. She makes fun of me because ' I don't care. I. just throw on whatever's comfortable and what's relatively clean. I've never been into the baggy stuff. Pants are supposed to sit on your hips. I like to wear jeans that I don't have to wear a belt with, and maybe a T-shirt, or maybe just a pair of shorts. The only time I get dressed up is when I go golfing.
HOW DOES THE SURF CULTURE MIX WITH GOLF?
When the water's flat, we golf. We travel to all these tropical places, and there are usually golf courses around. For years we didn't know anything about golf, but then we discovered something possibly as challenging as surfing—or at least as frustrating to learn as surfing is in the beginning.

Once the Blossom Is From the Retirement Rose - What Then?

One benefit of getting labored like a pharmacist as lengthy when i did was the chance to become familiar with and understand retired people as well as their lifestyle. Things I learned from their store has already established an enormous effect on my considering ways to get the most from the mature years. When I interacted together I did previously believe that if everyone considering retirement had an opportunity to cope with retired people every day it might significantly change how people get ready for and reside in the retirement years.

Probably the most essential things I learned from retired people is the fact that you will find distinct stages to retirement but very couple of people understand individuals stages and for that reason neglect to plan or know how to approach them.

The very first stage of retirement includes the recently upon the market taking pleasure in the liberty of not needing to start working every single day. This is exactly what I call the honeymoon phase -- finally dealing with do that which you imagined about doing -- getting a lot of fun and taking as a given the fun, finances, and a healthy body can last forever. For many retired people this stage can last for a couple of-three years.

The 2nd stage heralds closure from the honeymoon phase and also the realization the fun and games aren't as enjoyable or fulfilling because they was previously. The settled retirement lifestyle begins to consider hold. But here's the one thing --many people don't anticipate or realize that the standard settled retirement lifestyle leads to "stealth decline" -- decline that creeps in consequently of failure to make use of the body and mind with techniques that maintain youthful expertise. Most aren't seeing it coming. Also at this time, medical issues that might have been minor irritants before begin to flare. And finances at this time? Statistics aren't within the positive column for too many retired people.

Adding to stealth decline may be the daily interaction with mainly with same-age people. Frequent contact with their conditions and mindset affects the speed of aging. It's impossible to connect with similar-age people regularly inside a relatively closed atmosphere and never be affected by them and just how they live.

Most retired people arrive at the second stage accepting and liking with where they're in existence. Buddies, activities, health, and financial issues are what they're. Existence is constantly on the revolve round the traditional upon the market culture, with participation in senior activities with senior buddies. Minimum thought is offered towards the future when it comes to what could be, and that is fine whether it enables you to happy.

Then there's stage three. It may be probably the most satisfying or disappointing stage of existence.

In the finish of stage two, many retired people still want higher productivity of existence and from themselves, however they don't get sound advice or how to get it done. When they consider returning to work on previous employment, or something like that associated with it, probably that isn't an authentic option because a lot has transformed. They've transformed too, psychologically and physically. Frequently, an enormous area of the change is devastating lack of self worth since they're no more productive. Signs and symptoms of physical degeneration compound the problem. So there they're, desiring more but not able to locate fulfillment. Some possess the courage and capability to reinvent themselves, most don't.

The very best technique is this: Before retirement, know yourself. The lure of leisure and freedom that accompany retirement is compelling however, you can't allow an illusion vision of paradise to change reality. KNOW What And Who You're AND That Which You STILL WANT From Existence and just how you want to have it prior to you close the doorway in your work existence.

If you're now upon the market and also at stage three, and when you're determined to obtain more from existence but feeling stuck, here are a few suggestions:

Extricate yourself in the upon the market culture and lifestyle.

If you're able to look for a part-time job you like, contemplate it a present even when the pay is under you need.

Take classes which will train a new skill that does not has only value available on the market but can help you grow and gaze after critical cognitive capabilities.

Join new groups that a lot more than eat, meet, and retreat and therefore are not age-related.

Run for public office. You cannot inflict worse compared to clowns presently in control.

Volunteer to complete work which will take you outdoors of yourself and place you in connection with more youthful people. Volunteer jobs are frequently an excellent gateway to compensated work.

If you're a lady, avoid ladies who concentrate on being "youthful" but live previously. They'll drag you lower and sabotage your goals.

You're a lot more than your chronological age. You've acquired knowledge and valuable encounters that aren't outdated. If you've still got a need to create and convey do not let the culture or tradition to tamp lower your enthusiasm or extinguish your determination with very finely veiled suggestions that you're too old or otherwise as competent while you was previously. Pay attention to your body and mind and start re-pedaling existence while you would rather so that it is. Following the retirement honeymoon has ended you'll have a existence that's fantastic. Be courageous and go for this. There's you win and everything to achieve.
